How much do personal trainers make?

Posted on

This is a common question asked by those who are looking for a career in personal training. Although it is a common question, it is really hard to answer. It’s equivalent to asking how much do entrepreneurs make. My point is that it depends. There are many determining factors such as the amount of dedication you have, knowledge, networking skills, and a desire to succeed. Though not an exhaustive list, I believe that it is necessary to have a desire to succeed in order to make a nice salary from personal training. You will hear numbers from $30k to $100k a year because they are what the majority of trainers make. But that doesn’t mean you can exceed those numbers. Here are some things to consider if you want to exceed six figures from this career.

Become the best personal trainer

The best personal trainer Sacramento is not capped. Being the best means that you can get clients good consistent results. You have a wide arrange of knowledge on the subject and know how to properly put clients on the appropriate plan. Once you can get your clients what they want they are pretty much yours. Why would they go anywhere else? In a matter of fact, because you’ve done a great job, the word will spread. This is where you can start building your brand and start charging more. Collect testimonials from your clients and use that as a form of advertising. Which brings us to my next point.

Marketing yourself like crazy

While it’s good to have clients refer you to other, it’s crucial not to rely on just word of mouth. The best personal trainers understand that networking is a core principle in building their business. Because that’s what personal training is, it’s a business. And in business, it’s important to network and get your brand exposed. Go out to networking events, leave your business cards everywhere you go, build a website and learn how to use social media. It’s a new generation and networking has never been so much easier with Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube.

Move to high-income areas

This one requires a little relocation. It’s going to be hard to charge clients anything over $200 where the average income is only $40k. My best advice is to first complete the above 2 steps and once you’ve already got some good income rolling in, you can move to an area where the average income is more than $100k. Repeat steps 1 and 2 and watch your career take off.

While this is not a definite guide on how to succeed as a personal trainer, it can help lead you to the higher end of the income spectrum. The more hours you put into your business, the more likely it will pay off. Just know that when starting any business, the first few months or even years will be slow. That’s why it’s important to keep yourself motivated and surround yourself with like minded people who will only push you further. It also helps to seek advice from someone who is where you want to be.

Good luck!
